for a better guide of netplay (thanks to blitzwing)
Opps I accidentally deleted the old thread. Umm so there's a netplay patch out now for efz.
What's known about it so far:
It works best with people near you.
- Raven has observed about within 50 miles you can get ~60fps.
His personal results:
Within CA constant 60 fps. Smooth to frequent lag spikes depending on person connecting to.
From CA to Taiwan 14-25fps. Lots of lag spikes.
From CA to New Jersey ~30fps. A few lag spikes.
From CA to Canada (BC, Vancouver?) - ~40 fps a few lag spikes.
From CA to Singapore - 17-34fps jumping, frequent lag spikes
To run the patch you need to delete all your replays in your replay folder. In the older versions you needed to use keyboard only or use joy2key to use a pad. Now with the Beta3 version pads are supported.
After you meet these conditions you can try and connect with someone. One person needs to be the host and the other the client. The host will run the program and press Enter, they'll set the frameskip (generally you'll set it at 8 or 9 since ping is likely to be 50+) and wait for the client to connect. The client simply types in the host's ip address and they should connect.
Play and enjoy! Though speed is still quite low if you are any real distance away from the person you are playing at this point.
Trouble Shooting:
Q. Can't play? The Make sure of the following things:
1. Your EFZ version is 4.02.
Get the latest patch at tasofro.net
2. You deleted all replays file in your replay folder.
3. You put the netplay exe in the same folder as your efz.exe.
4. One of the two players is directly connected to their modem.
It has been noticed that you might have trouble if both players are behind a firewall/router/switch/whatever. If possible have one person be directly connected to their modem so that there won't be any trouble.
It is possible for two people behind modems to connect to each other, but this requires some opening of ports and specific settings that have not been confirmed and tested yet. More info as people make comments about it.
Comments:
[02:21] <daijooPUI> if you wish, please add in there that the port is udp 78 in b2 and b3, should work flawlessly with pads
Q. The client crashed?
A. It seems to happen randomly. Nothing to do but try and connect again. People behind routers seem to crash more?
Q. Where is the patch?
A. Right here.
